POWER TRANSMISSION SYSTEM

A power transmission system is a mechanism that transfers power from the prime mover (such as an electric motor or engine) to the machine or working device (load) in order to perform useful work.

Main Functions of a Power Transmission System
  • Transmit power from the power source to the driven machine.
  • Adjust speed and torque according to operating requirements.
  • Change direction of rotation or motion.
  • Engage or disengage power flow when needed.
  • Protect equipment from overload or shock loads (using couplings or clutches).
     
Types of Power Transmission Systems

1. Mechanical Power Transmission power is transmitted through mechanical components such as:
  • Gears – for short-distance, high-efficiency power transfer (e.g., spur, helical, bevel gears).
  • Chains – used for medium distances; provides positive (non-slip) drive.
  • Belts – such as V-belts or flat belts; suitable for longer distances and flexible alignment.
  • Shafts – transmit torque between power source and driven units.
  • Couplings – connect two shafts together.
  • Clutches and Brakes – engage or disengage power transmission.
2. Electrical Power Transmission uses electrical energy instead of mechanical motion, including:
  • Electric motors (AC/DC types)
  • Inverters / Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) – to control speed and torque.
  • PLC or automation systems – for smart control and synchronization.


3. Hydraulic Power Transmission transmits power using pressurized fluid:
  • Hydraulic pumps – convert mechanical energy into fluid energy.
  • Hydraulic motors – convert fluid energy back to mechanical rotation.
  • Cylinders (Actuators) – provide linear motion.
4. Pneumatic Power Transmission uses compressed air to transmit power:
  • Pneumatic cylinders
  • Valves
